A vacancy has arisen for a Degree Apprentice Manufacturing Engineer (Optical) to join the Precision Optical Systems Group at the OpTIC Technology Centre in St Asaph which forms part of the Glyndwr University campus network.

The vacancy offers the successful applicant a unique opportunity to join a small highly motivated and skilled team where independent thought and self-motivation are encouraged

The successful candidate is expected to follow a training programme fully whilst working as part of both the optical polishing and metrology teams in the group. The programme of training will include familiarisation with the processes involved in fabrication of precision optical components. The goal of the training is to give the apprentice basic knowledge and hands on capabilities to design, develop and implement polishing and testing techniques to fabricate bespoke precision optics within the customer's specifications and timescales.

Flexibility and the ability to work with a team to manufacture and integrate high end optical components, working alongside experienced optical systems design and test engineers to deliver leading edge low volume high technology systems and components.

Whilst the training programme is structured to cover all the areas mentioned above, the Apprentice is required to be flexible to adapt to the group’s production schedule in order to meet the deadlines for delivery of the commercial contracts, this may include some shift work (additional shift premium paid) when the process demands.

The Apprentice is required to attend Wrexham Glyndwr University on one day release per week during the academic terms undertaking a Degree Apprenticeship in Production Engineering for 3 years.

The successful candidate will have the equivalent of 112 UCAS tariff points are required for BEng Production Engineering entry. That equates to 3B’s at A Level (including Maths and Physics). DMM at BTEC Extended Diploma or D*D* Diploma, also accepted would be HNC and HND qualifications in relevant Engineering Discipline, relevant Level 3 or Level 4 qualifications will be considered.

Applicants should have an interest in practical technical problem solving, developing their engineering applications and theory skills and a desire to achieve the highest standards in everything they do.

The ability to communicate in Welsh is desirable for this role.
